In January 2008, my family decided we’d had enough of the gray Ohio winters, and we rented a house in Wilmington, NC . At the time we were trying to sell our house in Ohio, so we thought we’d give NC a try. I had never tried to get freelance work anywhere but in Columbus, so I was a little concerned about how it would go.

I was a total embarrassment to hubby - everywhere we went, I would strike up conversations with strangers, trying to find out what they did for a living, where they worked, who they knew. I handed out a bunch of business cards and met some very interesting people!
The first job I found was through Craigslist for the publishers of the Greater Wilmington Business Journal and Wilma! Magazine (you gotta love the name!) It was a great introduction to the city, the culture and the people. This is a job I did for them which showcased some of the beautiful sights in the area.
I also found an opportunity to work at a very well-respected firm, Morvil Advertising and Design. These people were awesome. (You gotta love a boss that wears flip flops to work!) They were all about 12 years old, (or so it seemed) and had probably been doing Photoshop in their cribs. Each one was extremely patient and helpful to me. It reminded me of another drawback to freelancing at home - no one to bounce ideas off, or ask a question. I had to keep reminding myself of all the “experience” I had …
Now back in Ohio, I am once again “pounding the pavement.” Given the economy and being gone for a year, my work environment has definitely changed. Marketing, social media, website development are now all parts to my business I never did before. There are many sources out there, but one I like is The Marketing Mix. What other blogs or websites do you like for marketing tips or inspiration?
I see it’s almost 5 and time for an attitude adjustment…
